Get It Done Early – This Is Why You Should Transfer Vehicle Ownership Immediately.

Buying or selling a used vehicle is an exciting experience! It’s so exciting that we often either forget about or postpone the legal name transfer from one owner to the next. That delay is a dangerous mistake that can create very real problems for both parties. Stay tuned as we explain why getting your name transferred on the vehicle’s Certified Copy is so important.

Why It Matters:

1. The Registered Owner Can Still Be Linked to the Vehicle

Imagine taking a leisurely drive with your loved ones when suddenly you get pulled over by the TTPS, held at gunpoint, and asked to put your hands in the air. You may think, “That would never happen to me,” and if you’re a law-abiding citizen, you’d probably be right. But, what if it’s a case of mistaken identity – one tied to a vehicle that’s no longer yours, but still legally is?

Well, in the best-case scenario, it would ruin a perfectly good afternoon as you try to explain your innocence. But, at worst… Let’s not even discuss what could happen if things go south. So, to avoid being linked with someone who may be involved in legal disputes – whether through a vehicle you purchased or through one you’ve sold – ensure you legally transfer ownership at the time of the transaction, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Those may be extreme examples, but until the transfer is officially completed, records will connect you to the new or previous owner if the vehicle is involved in:

  • Traffic Offences
  • Parking Violations
  • Civil Disputes

2. Insurance Issues Can Arise

Now, consider another scenario. Imagine making a claim after an accident, only for the cheque to be addressed to the previous owner of your vehicle, allowing them to collect your money.

Yes, this can actually happen! Insurance policies are based on very specific details about the insured party, ownership, use of the vehicle, and declared risk information. If ownership changes but documents are not updated, this can create complications when making a claim. In other words, if your policy says one thing and your vehicle’s Certified Copy says another, you may run into delays or problems when you need help most.

Without a completed transfer, the vehicle’s buyer may experience additional issues with:

  • Updating records
  • Future resale
  • Certain licensing transactions
  • Confirming ownership
  • Obtaining official copies or records

This is why we never want to leave it for later.

How to Transfer Vehicle Ownership in Trinidad and Tobago:

If you take anything away from this blog, it should be that buying or selling is only half the job – getting it legally name-transferred finishes the process! Here is what you, and either the previous owner (or current buyer), must do in order to transfer your name to (or from) the vehicle’s Certified Copy:

  1. Prepare and walk with the following documents:
    • Two (2) Forms of Identification
    • A receipt of the vehicle’s sale
    • Proof of Address
    • Valid insurance certificate for the vehicle (get a TATIL quote)
    • Fully completed transfer form (available here)
  2. Arrive at The Licensing Division Office nearest to you (Examples: Port of Spain, Caroni)
  3. Both the previous owner and buyer must be present
  4. Walk with cash for the $10 registration fee, plus a transfer tax based on the vehicle’s age
    • This can range from $6,000 to just $150 (for vehicles 10 years and older)

Final Word from TATIL

At TATIL, we believe insurance works best when customers are informed and protected before problems arise. If you’re buying or selling a used vehicle, don’t leave the transfer for “later.” Get it done early, get it done properly, and drive forward with peace of mind that lasts.
